Online Patient Self-Service Connects People to their Health Record
Patients can now complete secure forms for new patient intake, prescription renewals, appointment requests and more from a clinician’s website
Monday, June 1, 2015 – Toronto, ON – Today at the 2015 e-Health Conference, CognisantMD launched Ocean eRequests, making it possible for healthcare professionals to securely collect information from patients online and add it to the patient record in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The most recent addition to the Ocean Platform, eRequests offer “website self-service” for patients, allowing them to request an appointment or prescription renewal, complete new patient intake forms, participate in clinical research, or complete any medical form, without risking a breach in patient health information.
Since the introduction of the Ocean Platform’s Tablet and Online Questionnaires in late 2013, the cloud-based platform has experienced rapid adoption in primary care and specialist clinics across the country including St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences, and the University of Ottawa Family Health Team. Over 1000 patients each day now use a mobile tablet to share crucial patient information that is then automatically updated in the patient record or used in clinical research.
“By replacing paper forms and letting patients contribute to their patient record online from home or the waiting room, Ocean is transforming patient care – resulting in better patient charting and clinical decision support, and more opportunities for face-to-face interactions with patients,” said Dr. Doug Kavanagh, Family Physician and Co-Founder of CognisantMD. “Now that we’ve added the option for patients to complete forms online from a clinic website using eRequests, Ocean is also helping to make clinic administration even more efficient by reducing the number of phone calls and pressure on clinic staff, while saving time, and improving patient satisfaction.”
With its integrated, EMR-agnostic approach and validated approach to patient data security in the cloud (Ocean is PHIPA and HIPPA-compliant), the Ocean Platform represents a transformative technology for the healthcare industry. The platform acts as a secure layer that connects patients with their healthcare provider’s EMR, using a simple mobile touchscreen or online interface. Data entered by the patient can then be used to calculate scores, recommend treatment based on clinical guidelines, add a clinical note to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and even generate customized patient educational materials and handouts.
“Ocean gives my patients a way to share sensitive health information online and on waiting room tablets, for everything from appointment requests to new patient intake and detailed patient history-taking,” said Dr. Sam Azer, Ross Creek Medical Centre. “It has transformed my clinic, saving us time and improving the patient-physician experience. My patients love how easy it is to request an appointment online, and I appreciate how it generates clear, concise and accurate notes for the patient record while eliminating the need for me to spend time asking basic questions that are easily answered with a questionnaire.”
